I am freshening up an old flintlock I built 20 yrs ago. At the time, I used a vent liner that was straight sided. It is threaded 5/16-24. When I install it in my barrel, you can see a line around the perimeter of the liner. It fits perfectly and all, but I'm wondering how some people install these where you don't see any trace of the plug itself. Some liners have a taper at the end and I guess you could countersink the threaded hole in the barrel slightly. Then file the top of the liner flush. Didn't want to do anything to my barrel without checking into proper technique. Thanks for any advice.

That is correct. Some have a beveled edge & some have a bevel then a straight edge. On that you would counterbore it & then chamfer the edge. Both you file flush with the barrel when finished.

If you choose the type that has a screw driver slot, it is best to fit it so that the slot is parallel with the barrel to prevent priming powder from going down the slot and getting in your lock, which could cause a lot of excitment if is was to ignite.
