Hello friends.

I'm nearly finished building my first kit pistol, a Pendersoli Kentucky .54 flintlock, and as things come together my mind wonders off to think about things that will make shooting and cleaning this new toy easier. One of my upcoming projects will be to build a loading stand for it, but that's for another post!

My only other flintlock is my Lyman GPR with a hooked breach and barrel release pins, so when I clean that rifle barrel I remove it from the stock and use the hot water method. Seems to be the case that most custom rifle barrels are pinned in place, but I sure do like the convenience of being able to remove the barrel for cleaning.

This pistol barrel can be removed, but it's a bigger task involving removal and replacement of a very small threaded screw at the muzzle end that I fear will get stripped out over time (plus the larger screw that goes into the trigger plate underneath).

I looked into these Ox-Yoke "black-out" flush kits for cleaning muzzleloaders and thought they were pretty neat. All you do is remove the nipple or the vent hole liner on your barrel, screw this little kit into that hole, and it has a rubber hose that you then put into your hot water for cleaning. They sell different size adapters for different size vent hole liners or nipples, but I've no way to know what size my vent hole liner might be. It is not in the Pendersoli parts diagram/list either, but I'm hoping that someone here may have the same pistol and may know the size??

Does anyone know the size? RMC sells that cleaner in 1/2-28, 1/4-28, 6.1mm, 6.75mm, and 10-32. I have a caliper for measuring the outer diameter of the liner, but I'm not sure if that's how they size these things?

Save yourself a lot of grief. Buy a box of 500 round toothpicks. I cut a box in half on my bandsaw, that gives me 1,000 pieces. To clean the pistol, drive on one of the toothpicks into the touch hole, lightly, with a hammer to make a waterproof seal. Pour the cleaning solution in through the muzzle and clean as you would normally. Yeah, it requires tipping the gun and pouring out the water, but if you wanted it easy you'd shoot a cartridge gun. After the barrel is clean, pull out the toothpick and toss it. Run a few more patches to dry the barrel and then oil it.

Don't over think it. This is supposed to be fun. I had one of those kits when I started. Water everywhere, used it once.

BTW, please resist the temptation to continually remove and reinstall the touch hole liner. It is not necessary. Again, don't over complicate things. K.I.S.S.

Thanks guys. I’ve been removing the barrel on my GPR, and also the touch hole liner, every time I clean it. May have to find an alternative strategy with this one, but admit that i am a bit anal retentive about cleaning firearms...
