I drilled and tapped the hole for my vent liner without any problems.

The problem I do have is getting the liner flush with the barrel. I tried to countersink it with a countersink bit and a drill bit. I have most of it in but still have just a hair of the liner sticking out to where it will catch the frizzen. I had to stop countersinking because I was widening the hole more than I intended on doing.

I am using a stainless steel ventliner for my barrel. I'm asking for any suggestions, thanks.

BTW, what would be considered the proper distance from the breechface to the outside of the vent liner hole? 1/16" or so?

Hi
I agree file it smooth with the barrel, But before you do,-- make sure that none of it is sticking out inside the barrel. You may have to trim that end also. Most of the ones I have installed I must shorten 1st. :winking:

If the countersink is getting wider than the touch hole liner and it is not flush then you have the wrong angle on the countersink that you are using. Your countersink is too shallow and the liner is bottoming at the threads before it mates flush. Just filing it down would make it flush but you will have a gap under the countersink. I don't know what you are working on but I use a 90 degree to do the ones that I do. Sounds like you may have a 100 degree. A standard drill bit is 118 degrees.

The countersink bit is an 82 degree bit. The problem is that the vent liner has that little lip on top. I didn't think to buy a liner that was all thread and no top lip.

File some metal off the bottom of the liner and see if it flushes up. Taking the barrel out of a full stock rifle can be tricky if you've never done it, it's a good way to break the stock. If you decide to take the barrel out, remove the pins and screws etc. Grab the barrel and stock with both hands and tap the heel of the stock against the floor. This should loosen the barrel. Do not pry it out from the tang end.

If I do one with the lip on it I countersink and then counterbore for the lip. I thought you were doing one with no lip on it. I use an endmill for the counterbore to make it flush.

I didn't think of countersinking first then boring the hole out. I'll try to remember that next time or just use a simpler vent liner all together. I ended up filing the liner flush. It looks alright minus a small ring around the liner.

If someone asks about it I'll tell the person it give the rifle character along with the other mistakes I made :rotf:

Thanks to all for your suggestions :hatsoff:
