I use a small feather of nearly the same diameter as the hole, sliced the end on an angle. Free is good. Feathers are everywhere in my barn.
Its the same feather I use to put the gun away overnight in hunting season. No powder in the pan and a feather in the hole tells that its still loaded for the morning.
 
Next time you whack a road chicken, partridge, Grouse- Keep the whole tail/fan. Nail it to your wall somewhere.

Pluck out a feather and you will have the perfect way to maintain your vent/poke your powder charge.

A nice mature bird yields a stout tool that holds up well until you lose it, which oddly enough seldom seems to happen, just too easy to find a place to tuck it. If you sit on a grouse feather it will be far less painful then if you sit on a metal pick!
