Mike, would that be the side that the lock is on?

I drill them centered on the pan and level with the top of the pan. Some folks go a little higher, some a little lower.

Yep, sure enough, lock side is the best option. Sort of toward the breech end to.

welcome to the forum Scot !
You'll learn to love it here.
... kinda like a free trip to the dentist.

play around with the search engine, check out some photos, get a book or two or three, and ask questions here.
It's a good crowd.

The only thing is....the 'Search' function kinda sucks..........It seems you can put in something like "touch hole" and will get a hundred hits from stock stain to rear sights?
Macon

Put this liner in a couple days ago. You want your touch hole about this position in relation to your pan, sunset with the top of the pan.

Caution, measure a bunch of times to get it right.

I agree it's a bit clunky, but searches can be tuned to better serve. Some folks may not be hitting that question mark help link - there's some useful info there.
...but we digress....

It doesn't know what you're looking for, only what you type in.

Yep, and "touch hole" is mentioned in every one of them.

Sometimes, too general of a term won't give the desired results. I suspect that "vent" would also return everything from flintlocks, someone wanting to rant, to the heater in your car.

MeteorMan, That's pretty much my experience too. I figure it must be me, what with being techno-challenged and all  , though I do try a lot of different combo's. :idunno:

Geez, Jack! Cut him some slack. We have many members here who started out low on the knowlege pole, myself included. Comments like that do nothing to promote this site as a place to promote and encourage the sport of traditional muzzle loading.
Some people have the luxery of being introduced to ML by a knowlegible person who can get them going in the right direction. Others come to it by whim because they have seen a movie or something & may or may not be able to find all they need to know on their own. If they don't & make a bad mistake, we end up reading about it and ranting about their stupidity.
If we aren't part of the solution, we are part of the problem.

I dunno boys, I'm havin' trouble being too sympathetic about issues with the search engine.
We get free access to info and advice from some of the best here, and to worry about having to enter a few extra attempts at finding it... well... I'm not complaining!

If a person tunes their request syntax, and gets a smorgasboard of topics, that's because the threads themselves wander, not because the engine is faulty.
Like this thread. 8 months from now, a guy enters flintlock+pistol+vent and he's treated to a discussion on the search engine.
Sorry Claude. I'm done.

I suspect you are correct, but is still frustrating.
Jack
I know but I wish it could read [what I have left of] my mind.

Let's at least give him credit for trying "search". How many hundreds have we seen where the poster is too lazy to try a search and asks "What kind of finish do you use?", or some similar, continually asked question.
