Find some fireworks shells that are close to the right diameter. We've done it with an 18th century cohorn from the ground. You have to light the fuse though, not use the trigger. They don't get much altitude and the burst may reach the ground OR you can shoot them so they land then burst. Pretty spectacular, but..., make sure the ground isn't too dry.
