I was reading a couple books on muzzleloading this weekend as Im a greenhorn. They brought up the term "volume for volume" measuring when dealing with pyrodex and real black powder. Now to me "volume for volume" means that I can load 60 grains of BP, and 60 grains of Pyrodex, because that would be "volume for volume".
Everything else I hear is to reduce pyrodex loads by 20%.....i.e. 100 grains of BP = 80 grains pyrodex.

So Im in a pickle, confused to say the least.

Ive been shooting 60 grains of pyrodex cuz thats all I can get. I just bought 3 lbs of FFFG Goex, and want to try it out (as soon as the wind dies down from gale force).
Now, do I load "volume for volume" and load 60 grains FFFG (just like my pyrodex), or do I load 80 grains FFFG (20% more)??????

I should note Im of course using a volumetric BP measure.

That whole "volume for volume" bit in the book confused me. Any help and clarification would be great.

Thanks

Boone

You could always refrain from shooting PyroHex... :blah:

AFAIC when it comes to substitutes 777 is the best & most consistant by far - and I've shot them all, including BlackMag3, all of the American Pioneer products, Goex Pinnacle, Pyrodex & 777 in loose and Pellet.

With Pyrodex you get all of the problems of Substitutes while still having to deal with Sulfer/sulfuric acid.

What kind of gun are you shooting? Start with the Volume load. That's all that really matters.

Im shooting a .54 caliber cabelas hawken, PRB's.

(Im not a big fan of the pyrodex, but its ALL I can get around here in loose powder......)

Grains is wieght, but few people measure their powder by weight, instead, most of us use volume. Pyrodex is lighter than black powder. Measure your Pyrodex by volume and you'll be fine.

You don't have to reduce Pyrodex loads.
It is made to be measured by volume like black powder. It is lighter than BP so if you wanted to weigh your charges you would have to take that into consideration.
Work up your loads with Goex 3F. I think you will like the way it shoots and never look at Pyro stuff again.

Congrats on getting some real Goex Black powder. You will like it! Pyrodex RS is measured in volume, comparible to Goex FFG Black powder. 80 grains of RS Pyrodex, is equal to 80 grains of FFG Black Powder, when measured in your powder measure. Goex FFFG powder is usually reduced by 15, to 20% from FFG loads, due to higher pressure, when used in larger caliber rifles. Usually, .45 caliber, and larger. So, in my T/C .54 Renegade, that I sometimes shoot 100 grains of Goex FFG, I will use 85 grains of Goex FFFG. Again, I think you will like the performance of Goex FFFG. Accept No Substitute.

bareback jack,
Sounds like what they are all trying to say is....
example...
IF your measure was set to give you 100 gr black powder (by volume) the same setting will give you 100gr pyrodex (by volume)
the black powder will weigh 100 grains (if weighed on a scale) and the pyrodex will weigh 80 grains(if weighed on a scale)

I use the same measure wether I load black powder or pyro.
sure will be glad when all that pyro that came with son's gun is gone!

Hope this clears things up a little!

What it is saying when it says "volume for volume" is if .2 cubic inches of Black Powder is a good load then .2 cubic inches of Pyrodex is equal to in in power.
As was mentioned, it won't weigh the same as the Black Powder, but it will produce about the same velocity and pressures as the Black Powder does for that volume.

Unlike smokeless powder, when we Black Powder shooters talk about X grains of powder, we are talking about a volume of powder that weighs X grains if it is Black Powder . The important word here is Volume so if your adjustable Black Powder measure is set for 80 grains of powder it will throw about 80 grains of Black Powder but because Pyrodex is lighter in actual weight for a given volume, the same volume of Pyrodex would weigh less. That gives you more shots per pound of Pyrodex because a pound is a pound whether it is Black Powder or Pyrodex.

I lower my volume of Pyrodex P (fffg) by 10%.
I would lower my volume of 777 (ffg) by 15%.
I lower my volume of 777 (fffg) by 20%.
All relative to BP & Pyrodex (ffg)
