A friend of mine gave me a CVA SxS 12ga kit 2 weeks before he passed. He'd been sitting on it for years and years pristine and rust free in the original box. I offered to help him put it together but he never seemed to want to, anyway now it's coming together.

The question of wads, the barrels measure .720 cyl x cyl. BPI 12ga wads are .740 for a .729 12ga bore for a squeeze factor of .011. will going down another .009 diameter be too tight? (squeeze of .020)

BPI also lists 13ga wads at .720 for a .710 bore, squeeze factor of .010. These would not grip my bore at all it seems at my .720 exact size bore.

I can find no .730 wads that would seem to be just right for this gun

I'm hoping that others with CVA SxS's will lend a hand and maybe end my agonizing over wads, perhaps tell me the loads that have worked best in your
CVA doubles Thanks.

Will not be a problem. If you can get them down they will come back out.

The over-shot card may be a problem. But if you use a dowel of 11/16" (a thinned down 3/4" or home-made from a piece of wood) with a slightly rounded nose it will cup the card into the bore.

Or use 1/2 of a wad.

I don't have a CVA barrel, but I have several others of 28, 20, 13, 12 and 10 gauge. I use Circle Fly wads, overpowder, overshot and cushion, and I've always just ordered by the gauge, never had a problem with fit. Most any wad will conform to the bore if reasonably close to its diameter.

Personally, I would start with 13 gauge over powder wads, and 12 gauge overshot cards.

That way you can load the over powder wads with a less-than-pristine bore. And, the overshot cards won't move on you. I have a couple of SXS with .710 bores, and I use 13 gauge overshot cards in them. But, I can use the .740 cards without difficulty.

I do not know if they make that specific diameter, but if you call them I'm sure they could get you the best fit.

I gave up on fiber wads years ago and generally use 2 overpowder wads (.125"ea) and one overshot wad 1/16" in my Pedersoli SXS. It gives me great patterns and less headaches without the fiberwads.

I was concerned because of a seemingly thinner breech area on the shotgun compared to a rifle. Having virtually all my experience in (not shotguns) I didn't want to make a bomb by mistake with too tight of wads x3 or 4 per load. Sounds like it my not be such a big deal after all.
