Hey Everyone;

Got a really silly question. I was woundering with the fiber wads from track of the wolf if I should use lube on them or can I shot them dry. I was told that I could but wanted to get some expert advice. I am using the wads on a 12ga shotgun. If I should can you give me some suggestion for lube. Thanks for the help.

Yes and in fact I'd think you'd want to as the lube helps keep the fouling soft so you can keep on shooting without wiping between shots...I use prelubed wads from Circle Fly but don't know what lube they use.

I've seen several things recommended on forums such as bore butter, crisco, EVOO, etc, etc, but have not personally applied my own lube so I really can't "recommend" them and won't give you "theory".

DaveK has a lot of actual hands on experience in this area...shoots a lot of Flintlock trap...if he see's this he'll chime in and you'd probably do well to heed his advice

I am not acquainted with the term EVOO. What is it, if ya don't mind my asking? Not intended ta take the thread in a wrong direction.

Cooner that had me going for a while also. Then the light came on. Its a lube? Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Going to try it myself one of these days.
Fox :hatsoff:

Extra Virgin Olive Oil. comes from Rachel Ray's cooking show. funny that the abreviation has become common enough for us to use! BTW, it works great but so does any cheap vegetable oil, I soak my wads in a shallow plate of it for a few hours and then let them dry overnite on a paper towel, then store them in ziploc bags.

EVOO? shoot, y'all ain't watching Rachel Raye's cooking shows...Hank

Well heck!!! How do ya get ta be extra virgin anything? And what does being or not being a virgin have ta do with olives anyways? Nope never watched that show. EVOO, huh? :hmm:

Mike, So you don't watch cooking shows ether!
I was trying out some fiber wads in a new musket
last week. I dipped them in crisco vegtable oil the night before going to the range. The fellows
who were shooting near me said the wads came out of my barrel on fire and burned all the way to the ground. I could not see this myself because of the smoke from the musket going off. I was lucky because we got some very rare rain the day before. Had it been dry I could have set the woods on fire!!!!

Hey Guys,

Ihate to say I know who Racheal Raye is but I do. :rotf: I am going to try the olive oil. I made up about 40 of them tonight. I going to try them out tomorrow. Fon't have to worry about fires because of all the snow. I will give a range report tomorrow.

Peanut Oil is cheaper.

and it has a higher burn temp

it is also lower in cholesterol

Haven't used it yet but I might.

Triied the Olive Oil thing. It seem to work well. The only problem from the range today it that I kept hitting about a foot to a foot and a half low of my point of aim. Not sure but looking ast the way I shoulder and aim the shotgun. Never shot a shotgun before so I am looking at this being the problem.

why waist money on extra virgin O O when there are many oils out there that are just as good, even plain old olive oil?? are you using the wads for shooting or eating them?

Well, I don´t know Rachel either.
She´s not present in germany with her show it seems...
But I got a great old german book about hunting weapons from around 1871.
Really good, the guy knew what he was writing about, no doubt. And he also mentions olive oil with ML`s.

Ah and by the way, a little olive oil tip a doctor used to give me: Put a little olive oil in the water when taking a bath, it´s good for your skin. Cheaper and better than the industrial "good for the skin"-stuff.

Mix 50% mineral spirits and 50% vegetable oil. Put wads in a zip-lock bag. Sprinkle on a little mixture. Shake up the bag. Sprinkle on a little more mixture. Shake again. Do this until you get the wads where you want them. This works well, because the spirits help the oil soak into the wad easier. Then the spirits evaporate somewhat. One more tip. You might try putting an over shot card on top of your cushion wad before adding shot. It will improve your pattern a little.
