After many attempts to find an easy way to remove/replace the mainspring, I think I found it.
Items needed:
1- 1/4"x1/8"x2" stainless steel u-bolt
2- half inch nuts
4- washers
2- 1/4"-20 wingnuts
short piece of rubber tubing

Slide tubing over unthreaded bottom of u-bolt to keep from marring the brass trigger guard. The u-bolt I bought came with two hex nuts and a flat piece of steel with two holes to go over the bolt.
U-bolt under trigger guard, flat piece of steel over the spring, the two oversized half inch hex nuts over the threads(for spacers)then two small washers over each nut.I substituted wing nuts for the two hex nuts that came with the u-bolt.Just tighten the wing nuts and the spring compresses for easy removal. Try it,you'll love it.

Sounds marvelous. Removing, and replacing, the mainspring on my Walker is such a hassle that I have only done it once in the year I have owned the pistol.
I can most likely figure it out from your description, but a picture or two would be most helpful

I hate to sound ignorant, but it will not be the first time  : What is a Colt horse shoe tool?

It's the Walker nipple wrench. You can see one on cabela's website or the Possible Shop website. The problem with using that wrench is you also have to use pliers or some other tool to compress the spring first.

There's no reason now not to take those big boys apart and clean 'em real good after shootin'.
