Is anyone familiar with Walker's Custom Muzzleloaders out of Ms. (www.wcmuzzleloaders.com)

They offer a nice looking Southern Mountain Rifle that I am interested in. I am trying to stay around the $1000 mark, and would like a Southern Mountain rifle in .58 cal. I have read many positive posts on TVM's Southern Mnt. Rifle, but realize they have a long wait time on their rifles. (would like to have one well before next years elk season)

I shoot a TVM Tenn. in .40 cal I realy like it. I bought it as a kit from tvm and only had to wait about 6 weeks. My son bought their english fowler in the white and it took not quite a year. They build a good gun and will work with you so you get what you want. If you talk to them and they tell you a ship date take it with a grain of salt.

I talked to Mr. Walker and was impressed enough to place an order with him in August, which should be delivered in mid-late October if the storms didn't set him back. Like a kid waiting for Christmas :shocking:.

I researched rifles (and buttered up the Mrs.)all summer and decided on a TVM Southern Mountain, and was prepared to wait half a year if necessary, but the quoted lead time was just too much and I thought I would give Chris Walker a try. I am reasonably sure that I won't be dissapointed.

I have shot production muzzleloaders for more than 25 years, some were good, some I've been dissapointed in, but this time I wanted something a bit special. Some day I may build one, but when I build something I see all of the flaws and mistakes. Especially if it a first attempt, and even as a kit a top-notch rifle would cost enough such that there likely wouldn't be a second attempt (my kids want to go to college, so the cash goes there).

I hope this helps.

I just took delivery a few weeks ago on a rifle that I ordered from Chris. I couldn't be more pleased!
Excellent workmanship, finish, lines, etc. In addition, the rifle was delivered exactly when Chris told me it would be. Not only am I pleased with the rifle, but Chris is a true gentleman to do business with.
My rifle is an aged Southern Mountain - .38 cal. - percussion (I hate to type that "P" word here).
I highly recommend Walker Muzzleloading!!!

Oh 8905c, I am truly glad to hear that recommendation. My rifle will also be percussion. I have shot both flints and caps, but this time I needed a caplock.

Pronghorn I had a rifle build in the white by James Klein 269 729 4407 that cost $1100, an I could not be happier, a costume build rifle is a dream come true, It was less than two months from the time I ordered it too deliver. :winking: Rocky

I had James Klein assemble a Jim Chambers left hand Isaac Haines flintlock about 5 years ago. He did an outstanding job.

Thank you gentleman!!

I still have some work to do with the Mrs. as well. But hope to order the new rifle in the next few months.

A gun in .58 cal. is going to be either uncomfortable to shoot because of the recoil or will be very heavy. Stay away from the designs with deeply curved buttplates unless you intend to shoot light loads. Guns with a wide flat butt such as the Early Lancaster or Virgnia rifles are probably best if you want a .50 cal or larger.
