Anyone here that own a Wall Gun?
I found this pic with a huge Wall Gun.
What size is the bore and how much grains will be under the ball? :hmm:

I have no idea what the load would be but I betchya they put a BIG feller behind that thing to pull the trigger. :shocked2:

I've seen fotos and read about them, they shot multiple balls out of, had 100 gr. charge, hence the mount on the forestock. Aimed at mass of attackers. Smoothbores, sort of a 'swivel gun' that could be carried by a man.

I never shot this one as I built it for some one else. 4 bore is 1 inch. A typical load is 300 to 400 grains. These were shot with single patched round ball , and designed to shoot at quite a distance. Most were rifled. They were used from atop Forts and aboard ships. They were quite accurate. The oarlock was to assist in aiming and to help absorb recoil.

Parts are from TRS. I got the barrel from Ben Coogle. It is 2" at the breech and swamped. The stock was a walnut blank.
The lock alone weighs 3lbs and is 9" long.

Technically, a 4 bore has a 1.06" bore and uses 8 to 10 drams of powder with 3 ounces of shot or a ball about .950" give or take. Please realize this is 220 to 270 grains of powder and is the old service charge of the 19th century. I know October Country makes 8 and 4 bore rifles and may be able to help with loading info but bear in mind that theirs are heavy octogon barrels and NOT thinner fowler/musket type barrels. I'd suggest going way below and working up a charge till you got the ball to the target and leave it at that!

I have made two now both with barrels made from Ed Rayl and TRS castings.

This gun belongs to Doc, I'm afraid I couldn't afford to shoot it. It takes a bit of time to work up a load for a patched round ball. At first we had problems with the patches catching on fire, then we had another ball mould made too.
This gun weighs around 35 lbs., so it add to the loading time. When you have loaded and shot it around ten or 12 times, it seems that you could have easily shot 30 times with a "normal" size ML. So we are still trying to work up a proper load for it, but its still intertaining when it goes boom :winking: .

It's a range limit thing, much hassle shooting ball, but no problems shooting shot :grin:

Mine's only a 6 bore and 28 lbs, but it still has over 2 inches across the breech so I can put in what I like.

Four measures from my powder flask and four from my shot flask (5 ounces/280 grains) is comfortable.

Five measures (6 1/4 ounces over 350 grains) gets your attention.

Six measures (7 1/2 ounces over 420 grains) leaves you a bit bent out of shape :shocked2:

Haven't tried 7. The service charge for a wall gun is 4 ounces over 275 gns.

PS: Glad someone started this thread, got her out and found surface rust on parts of the lock, luckily in time to remove it without leaving a mark :thumbsup:
