I strained the big hull hunks through the 1/4 inch mesh, then the dye is strained through a pair of panty hose to remove the finer pieces then through a paint straining mesh. You do not want any pieces left in your dye as if your dye cloth, those pieces will stick to your cloth leaving black spots all over and it will look like your cloth has the measles !! I added about 3 tablespoons of isp. alcohol to each jar to prevent the mold. About 2 1/2 gallons of good strong dye yielded 10 and 1/2 quarts of walnut dye for use over the winter.
