Does walnut make for good shooting blocks? I have son scraps from a company that makes stock blanks.

A 1/2 inch thick block may break when you put weight on it.

I make loading blocks from walnut, cherry and maple. All work well, though the cherry needs to be thicker to prevent splitting when mishandled.

Here are 2 of the first ones I made from walnut, copied from an article in Muzzleblast magazine. Do a search here and you can find several different designs for loading blocks.
