I'm interested in buying a Long Land Pattern Brown Bess. I'm on a budget, so price a good consideration. Through research I found Middlesex Village Trading Company has the best price for what you get. I like the idea of getting all the accessories with the gun. Has anyone have one of their guns, or know anyone with experience with this company?

I had one of their Long Land Besses for a while. It wasn't a bad gun for the money. Shot well, fit and finish wasn't too bad, only things is they are Heavy. There is a Lot of extra wood on them and the stock wood is pretty heavy. But for the money i don't think you could go wrong with one.

I've got one and am quite happy with it. As previously mentioned, you get what you pay for. Mine is a bit heavy i guess, don't really have anything to compare it to. It sparks very well and misfires are few and far between. I use it mainly for reenacting and it is so dependable that I do most of the musket demonstrations for my unit. I have fired live rounds with it and accuracy is what you would expect from a musket. I have not tried to find any loads for it or done any serious attempts at improving it's accuracy. I have other firelocks to do that with.

I don't know where you live, but there were 4 Brown Besses for sale for $450 each at Friendship this last fall. If you can spend a few days at the NMLRA shoots, you just might find a real bargain.

I have a loyalist one, and its awesome, shure the wood is heavy but also very beautiful, loyalist has some kits of this model in there specials section in the website, all the work thats required is tons of wood finishing staining and oiling, scrubbing that barell aplenty and some brass finishing.
www.loyalistarms.freeservers.com if you go the route of the kit spend a tiny bet extra and get the lock tuned and frizzed hardened.

Good folk to do buisness with.

Cheers

I have one of the Middlesex Besses and am happy with it. I was in the same boat as you and could not afford a $1000 + for one of the "good" besses. The Middlesex bess shoots well, probably better than I do. The only problem I have had so far is that once in a while the flint breaks and the top jaw hits the frizen. Other than that it works fine. As far as weight it is lighter than my 1842 Springfield. The Bayonett needed a little fitting to make work. I had a friend make me a different bayonet that I like better.

Thanks,
