Washing patch material

Just bought 1/4 yard of pillow ticking form Wal-mart to begin working up a load for the new .50 cal GPR. To wash off the sizing on the fabric- just throw it in the washing machine a couple of times? :surrender:

I wash mine in the washing machine, nothing fancy. Toss it in the dryer. Then I iron it out so I can cut it into strips easier.

The washed ticking seems to take the lube easier than when it is unwashed. But that is just my experience.

I'm with Dawg on this one. Very little detergent and double rinse, then dry on "High".

Me too, wash it a couple of times, with laundry, throw it in the dryer with the rest of the laundry. Seems to hold lube easier and is softer.

I fold and lightly sew the frayed edge to minimize the strings. Glad I washed BEFORE cutting into strips. Lots of strings otherwise.

I think it takes lube/tastes better (if you spitpatch) after washing but it can be washed/dried cold. I will wash hot/dry hot if I want to thicken it a bit as another adjustable factor in load development(maybe 0.001 thicker).

I have only had 1 bolt of it that really needed washing. Usually it is fine off the bolt, but this was some blue ticking from JoAnne Fabrics & .020 & stiff as a board....... I just washed it, used extra rince & dried it on high temp/Heavy. But normally I just get my ticking at Walmart, buy the entire bolt when I find one the size I want & usually it is soft & doesn't need washing.
Also, you cannot go by the SKU number as it is imported & varible in thickness from bolt to bolt, so don't assume you can just go in, read the SKU & it be the same.... :shake: That is why when I do find one that is .015 or .016 that I like, I buy the whole bolt & it last me several years.

A quarter yard??? If you are going to the trouble and expense to work up a load, buy a few yards. What will happen is that you will spend all that powder, ball and effort to learn that some minor change in the cloth will make you do it all again. On the other hand, lots of range time is not necessarily a bad thing.
