Great cannon shooting weather last weekend! Gun is a 6lb rifled howitzer "Pack Parrot" replica and yes, we shoot live ammunition.

And some pix from our last outing. I'm in the glengarry on the worm and brush and my son is handling the sponges.

I would like to travel from Pensacola Florida to up to 600 miles to see cannon shoots. Public or private with invite.

So if anyone wants to share please post about it or send me a Private Message.

I agree with SwanShot

Come to the North South Skirmish Association Nationals in Winchester VA. We compete with Civil War arms in live fire and that includes artillery and mortars. Check out these videos for a taste-

Would it be possible to get more details?
Projectile?
How much powder?
Distance to target?
That would be a blast to fire and it looks really nice.

Projectile- pure lead hollow base conical
Powder- about half pound
Distance- short range, 100yd

Bullseye is about 4in dia, card suites were about same. Bore of the gun is about 3.5in so it'll give you an idea of what we were looking at through the sights. Our sights are aperture type and the main has a Hadley eyecup on it. We were shooting late afternoon and had some visibility problems with the Hadley sight and some other problems were revealed with the sight base so we had to switch to the backup rear.

Our match went like this-
First to 12oclock, correct aim second to 6oclock, reset gun and then 12oclock again (discovered problem with main rear sight), reset gun aim with back up sight bullseye, reset gun, 4 ring, reset gun bullseye, reset gun 4 ring. Move to card target. Heart- hit. Spade- miss to right, reset, hit. Diamond- hit. Club- hit. 1 spare shot left (only a certain number count), grins and giggles, aim at 12 on bullseye, hit. So between the Hadley and the main rear sight problem, we did ok. Were it not for the main rear having issues, we'd probably have shot even better. In the target pic, we're digging out the rounds for recasting.

dave951,
Do you have a picture of your mold? What does a 3.5" lead projectile weigh?
Very nice shooting!

Any history of the pack parrot? Always heard they were fantasy pieces. Cool gun none the less.
Fantasy piece, not really. They were in development but this was at a time where muzzleloading cannon and arms were ending their dominance on the battlefield so it was really a dead end from a developmental point of view. The status of the war coupled with that fact pretty much dictated there would be few made and those were rushed into service. After the War, muzzleloading arms were considered "old tech" and everybody wanted the new toys so this stuff was surplus and often sold for scrap. It's not surprising none have survived.

Thanks wasn't sure. Anywhere to read about these more? I can't find too much information. I love the looks of them.
