You are right, the kind of scale that you have is very slow and tedious. They are best suited for weighing out something to a pre-set weight such as when you are weighing out powder charges. They are not suitable for when you are trying to determine the weight of something such as a ball. I spent many years in a lab setting and have used many different versions of the beam scale. Some were the simple triple beam balances that weighed in terms of pounds and some were enclosed analytical chain balances that weighed in terms of hundredths of a milligram. You really need one of the electronic scales. Lyman makes a very good one and it is not expensive. If you will be doing much weighing, you really need one of these electronic balances.

The electronic balances are not without their short comings. When you first turn them on, you will notice that they are bad about drifting. Just re-zero before each and every weighing until it warms up. The warm up period varies from one balance to the next but it is usually warmed up in a few minutes. Like I say, the balance can be used during this warm up period, you just have to re-zero before each weighing. Even after it is warmed up, you will need to keep an eye on the zero between weighings to be sure that it returns to zero before you make a weighing. All during your weighings, you may have to re-zero it a few times. All that is required to re-zero it is to press a button so it is not all of that big of a thing. Just be sure to keep it zeroed and you will get very good repeatable results.
