I have a 36in straight .58 caliber barrel on mine and it is just shy of 9 lbs.

With a 44" barrel the .45 caliber will run about 0.8 pound heavier than a .54 of the same external diameter. However, .45 caliber is available in a "B weight" external profile while .54 comes in "C weight" so if you make that change the B weight .45 will be just a few ounces lighter than a C weight .54 caliber.
If you hunt nothing larger than deer and keep ranges reasonable I think you'll like the .45 caliber, especially so since recoil is a concern. The .45's are very popular for target shooting because there is a cumulative effect of recoil over a long day of shooting. People often find they start out shooting well but go to pot by the end of the match and never realize they have started to flinch and jerk the trigger.

It might be worth mentioning that when weighing a gun on an imprecise br scale, the best way is to weight yourself without the gun then weigh yourself again holding the gun. Subtract for gun weight.

Thanks everyone . The Rice charts are great and your thoughts on it are much appreciated. I now have good input to chew on. I ordered my rifle back in April and they tell me they are now working on February's orders so I have a few days to make up my mind. Thanks Again.

I think I have a solution. I will leave the current order as is and add a second order for a .40 or a .45 . I believe the wife should own one. I could even teach her to shoot it and help her break it in. This is the obvious solution to this most difficult problem. I like it.
