He has interesting use of the rolled leather button on another he has posted, I have used buckskin for small buttons on my frock and when done right (and tight) you dont even need any glue.
And I like his 'upside down' (to me) latching method too, I will have to rethink future projects!

That bag should serve you well; load her up and let her break in! What's the worse that could happen; you pop a stich or two and use your new skills to patch her up with a little love!
