birddog6, you there???? Are you ready for this????
I shot the Jeager today! ::
She's a shooter alright! Being the crank that I am I started load development with 90 grains Elephant 2f, primed with Swiss 4f, used .020 denim patch lubed with Crisco canola oil, beeswax mix (I was out of lizzard lard) and set the target up at 50 yards. I shot over the Oehler P-35 and the load gave an average of about 1340 f.p.s with Hornady .570 swagged balls. Extreme spread was 65 f.p.s., accuracy was good, with the impact about 2" left of bull and 3 of five shots cut nearly the same hole!
Next I used Swiss 1.5 f, all other variables were the same. I did tap the rear sight to the right a smidgeon and ripped off 5 more shots. This load developed an average of 1475 f.p.s. with a 29 f.p.s. extreme spread, shots were dead nuts on and again 3 shots cut one ragged hole.
I suspect that as I learn the habits of the rifle the groups will all be in the 1" or less catagory at 50 yards. The 90 grain Swiss 1.5 f load is stout and at an average of 1475 f.p.s. that .570 ball should drop a T-REX.
The trigger is awesome, the rifle is flawless and will shoot better than I can hold it.
Did I clean it with M.A.P.??? HELL NO!! I ain't puting that stuff down a Colrain swamped B barrel!
I used diluted Ballistol, alcohol swabbed her, then used Ballistol to lube the bore.
Thanks once again for building one hell of a fine rifle. It handles like a dream, balances perfectly, the set trigger is dandy, the sling is perfect, and that 33" barrel orta handle well in the woods.
After I play with her some more I'll start off hand shooting.
Nice job birddog :applause: :applause:.

Maxi: Well..... I guess I woke ya up, huh ?.... Wow, you just saved me that embarassing trip up there & I thank you for that ! ha ha !

Make sure you reswab the barrel 2 consecutive days after cleaning it.

I am happy ya like the rifle. Yes, it is definately a shooters & it grouped right off the test bench better than any I have ever built to date. (I shoulda kept it !)

By the way, that is a 31" Jaeger barrel & would be classed as a "D" rather than a B. Some of them I have were stamped D54, D58 or D62 and others just say 54, 58 or 62. But it is the next size heavier than a C barrel & most refer to them as D's barrels & then 31" or 37" length. TOW calls it a 58J barrel and the 37" barrel they call a 59-EM-D barrel.

Custom Flintlocks & Custom Skinning Knives

Way to go- after another trip out shooting, the barrel should be compeletely broken in, or whatever.
: Sounds like a shooter for sure and for certain.
: My 1/2 stocked Hawken with Green River 66" twist .58 1-1/8" bl. at 32" gave the following with .575ball & .022" Denim patch & using Curtis & Harvey powder. My rifle weighed 10 lbs. even.
: 95gr. spit for lube - 1,424fps. Bear Grease - NK
: 140gr. spit for lube - 1,683fps- Bear Grease - 1,736fps
: 160gr. --------------------------Bear Grease - 1,867fps
: 185gr. --------------------------Bear Grease - 1,951fps
: The 95gr. charge was used for target shooting & worked quite well. For long range shooting at the gong targets, I used the 140gr. chare as it was very accurate, more so than any load with spit patches. I didn't have trouble with fouling with the bears Grease. The Bear's oil was saved for freezing weather hunting.
: PRESSURE- according to Lyman - 180gr. 2F C&H gave 6,500LUP, while 180gr. GO gave 9,200LUP which is still very low compared to smaller bored rifles.
: My velocities were considerably higher than what Lyman got with the supposedly same powder. They were also considerably higher than what Lyman got with GO powder, indicating my pressures might have been slighty higher.
: The same charges with the 480gr. modified Old STyle minnie, with thick skirt & crisco lube went right up to 180gr. C&H for excellent accuracy, but I didn't chrono that bullet. It would group into less than 3" at 100yds. of the bench with any of the heavier loads above 120gr. 2F.
: I did chrono the modified(thick-short skirt) #57730 mould that cast 675gr.crisco lube & with 150gr. G-O powder gave- 1,250fps & with 160gr. 2F G-O gave 1,325fps for muzzle energy's of 2,342ft.lbs. and 2,605ft.lbs. respecitvely. Even with that lod, the hammer stayed on the cap. When shooting the heavy charge with the heavy bullet, I got the red berries in the muzzle, whatever that means - some say that means the correct load while others say it's just due to atmospheric conditions at that pressure, whatever it is.
: If the presures given by Lyman are correct, their loads are just fine in your gun, given the heavy barrel in the breech & shallow cuts for dovetails, etc. The presure at the swamp will ge greatly subdued.
: The gun lyman used for it's tests, all of them, was a Lyman imported Zouave rifled musket.
