I always pin my ramrod, even though I have dedicated rods for cleaning, and for pulling balls. You never know.

I don't care for the fiber glass one, with age they get hairy, tiny splinters rough on the hands

Twice a year I spray my fiberglass ramrods with polyurethane. Keeps them smooth and splinter free. Been using them for over 35 years with no problems.
