Miss Tudy has made a scabbard to house an 1874 Sharps. She has worked on this for about 30 hrs. beading and hand sewing I measures at 49" long and about 9" wide. The gentleman she made it for wanted something rustic yet NA looking, hence the beadwork and fringe. She also added some buffalo hair drops and lined it with red wool. It isn't quite as new looking as in the pics and I'm sure it'll only look better after a few outings on his ranch. Hope y'all like it, Bud

Miss Tudy here. I used both 11's and 10's, I can usually figure out any pattern using any beads because I make them myself. Helps to be good at math and to have the right needles. Thanks for all the nice comments.

First off, as usual, that's a mighty handsome piece you created there, you really do beautiful work.
Secondly, if you don't mind I would like to ask you a couple of questions.
1. How did you cut that long fringe so uniformly?
2. If you use the lazy stitch and a row of beads gets snagged and the thread broken do you just tie off the loose ends and re-sew a new row or two to replace what falls off?
Thank you

Sure is beautiful work.
I like how it is sewn together to get the length.
:hatsoff:

Miss Tudy here.
First I cut by eye only, I've been sewing since childhood so it's not that hard for me. I don't mark anything or use patterns because I think that takes away from the overall look of being primitive. One thing I can say is I use short scissors. This gives short strokes you can keep more in line, more control, long scissors take long strokes and can go off course quicker. My blades for this are only 2" long. Get good quality also, cheap tools result in bad rsults. Sometimes for very fine fringe I even use baby fingernail scissors. They are very sharp and take tiny strokes.
You can also get one of those cutter wheels (looks like a pizza cutter) and matt used to cut cloth for quilts. They will cut a nice strainght line and the marks on the matt help you stay straight. These are a little expensive and the wheel can be changed because leather dulls them. If you choose to use this cutter you will have to get a matt, these wheels cut anything underneath and will ruin quickly if not used with the cutting matt.
2.When repairing lazy stitch I go back about three rows go thru the hide to secure with a knot and start the thread thru a line of beads back and forth where it is not broken. Then when I come to the place missing beads I fill what is needed stitching each line to the hide, then go back and forth inside intact beading for a couple of lines and tie off. Use a very thin beading needle for size 13 or smaller beads and fine thread (dental floss is good) so it will fit thru already attached beads.
Hope this is not too hard to understand and helps.. Miss Tudy

Thanks for the information. That fringe demonstrates a mighty good eye and a steady hand. I'm trying to work up the nerve to give some beading a try but haven't mustered the courage yet.
Thanks again and keep those pictures of your work coming, I really enjoy seeing them.
