We have a cross-country trip planned for the in-laws 50th anniversary. We have to be in upstate New York on August 5th. We'll be traveling in a mini motorhome, but I'd like to introduce the family to a major rendezvous. Looking on the calendar, I see the NEPR is right nearby in New York, but 3 weeks too early. The Midwest primitive is the perfect time frame, just over in Wisconsin.

The NEPR sounds like a better choice with a kid, based on their advertising. Haven't heard much about the midwest. Any thoughts or comments on either? Family has been to Friendship once, never to a major rondy. I haven't been to one since 1984. Any other events I shouldn't miss while we're back there?

I've never been to the NEPR or the Mid West. I have been to the Eastern and the Old NW and not been dissapointed. Even when the Eastern rained most of the time down by the great mud pit of Zanesville. :rotf: I've had a very good time at all the nationals. I say go for it. :hatsoff:

If you are going to be anywhere close to Lexington, KY on your trip, you could go to the Contemporary Longrifles Association show on about the 3rd weekend of August. I'm not sure of the exact dates, but you could find them easily. It's an indoor show, downtown in the Rupp Arena complex, but if you like longrifles it's hard to beat. Many of the best builders have their guns there, and there are some originals too. there are also some parts vendors. I think it's Friday thru Sunday, but Sunday isn't as good as many go home early on that day.

Grand Encampment III is supposed to be around 10 - 12 August at Crown Point. Should have around a 1000 F&I re-enactors there.

Cheers, Bill

That's probably going to end up our first choice. Wife is trying her first-ever primitive camping this weekend, so we'll see...

Check out the Powder Horn News and/or Smoke & Fire news also. They list events by month, so you could see what is on your road from west to east. There are a number of small(er) events on the road that may be worth a 1 or 2 day stop, or even that 2 hour break from driving!

I don't know if this will fit your itenerary, but Dixon's gunmakers fair is July 27th-29th 2007, near Kempton PA.
