What about Musket Caps?

I agree with 99 per cent of the opinions of # 11 caps, and preparing your muzzleloader to shoot them without problems. I use # 11 caps on some of my Thompson Center, percussion rifles myself. I also use musket caps on some T/C, muzzleloaders. I disagree that musket caps are a "waste of time". To change to a musket cap on a T/C muzzleloader,(percussion sidelock) all you do is unscrew the # 11 nipple, and screw in a musket cap nipple. The T/C hammers are sized to fit the musket cap. I get reliable ignition from these rifles, with musket caps. Like anything else, # 11's, and musket caps have plus and minus. I find that musket caps are easier to handle, with thier larger size, and you do get more fire. However, they cost more than # 11's. If you follow the loading/cleaning procedures the other posters said either cap should work well for you.

I switched to RWS Dynamint Nobel no. 1075 plus , caps after having problems with CCI no. 11 caps . The RWS caps are the best caps I've ever used :results:. The only bad thing about the RWS caps is the price , $6.99+tax per 100 :shocking: . Oh well , quality don't come cheap ::. After switching to Pyrodex for a few years , I went back to using real black powder . My experience with Pyrodex , RS , and P , was that it fouled my rifles almost as bad as black powder did :results: . After 5 shots with Pyrodex I would almost have to beat a prb down the bore , I was also still putting oil in the bore after cleaning , at the time . I've been shooting muzzleloaders since 1975 (I started with cap&ball revolvers) and I've never had to pull a load either , but I have had to shoot 2 , 3 or more caps sometimes , before my load would go off . At the present time , I'm using Goex 3f black powder , and RWS caps , and have no problems with ignition , it is instantanieous . I've also switched from using oil in my bore , to using Natural Lube 1000 Plus (bore butter)in my bore after cleaning , and on my patches too , which has made fouling basicly a non-issue . I get 10 or more shots with my .54 before ramming becomes difficult :results: . :m2c: :front:

I have never had the fouling problem with Pyrodex RS or P. I can shoot all day, as many shots as i want, and never have to swab the bore. This is in a few .32 cal.'s, a few .50 cal.'s, and a few .54 cal.'s, as well as my double barrel .12 ga. And i was using Crisco for patch lube.

I used a musket cap when I started to be sure that pyrodox would ignite in my rifle. When the nipple wore out, I put the old on on, and used CCI magnum caps. I could see no difference. That was in a CVA Bobcat. :front:
