58 Rem or 1860 Colt, this is what would have been readily available. I would have to go with what that the Mercantile had unless I was a veteran of the war of the rebellion, Ha Ha.

If you were in the Old West and had to choose one piece on your hip to keep you safe which revolver would you choose? Whether you be a Trapper in the deep country or Pistolero passing through town what side arm are you putting your money/life on?

I'd carry whatever I could afford, Army caliber, 7 1/2" barrel, prefer Remington NMA with an extra cylinder or two, and if I could get/afford it, a Remington carbine in matching caliber with an extra cylinder. Otherwise an 1848 Colt's Dragoon on the hip and an Avenging Angel Colt's both in .44. except my current 'Dragoon' is an 1851 'Navy' in .44, and another one is cut down to 3" bbl. for an 'Angel', both in brass frame Southern perfection. Tack drivers. A .44 Derringer in each pocket would be nice too. And a Geo. Wolstenholm Bowie knife in a boot sheath.

Razor steel is too brittle for fighting, contrary to popular belief. They are great for shaving, if you keep them sharp. The Bowie knife does not run out of bullets, and will finish the fight with me, one way or another.
