Okay, so I took the suggestions:

If you didn't know the history, would you still think it use to be a purse??
Yes.
It looks nothing like rifle/gun bags in design, construction or form. The only thing they have in common is that they are made of leather...

Cover up the tooling, with deerskin and add to the flap and you'll have a descent bag..IMHO
Why not use the deerskin and make a proper bag?

Truthfully, there's so much variation in bags that wouldn't be my first guess. Its' distinctive enough I'd be asking you about it, but what the hey. Lots of other bags around I don't take a second look at. Recreations of known examples of bags from some dusty collection aside, everything else is an interpretation.

I'm betting the closer you got to Taos in the fur trade era, the more it would look like stuff carried by the locals. And heck, there were Mexicans trapping fur down there before the English settlers climbed on the Mayflower.
Thanks Brown for encouragement. Hey, I'm from New Mexico!

If you get near the museum in Santa Fe, set aside some time for a long visit. There were Europeans (Spaniards rather than English) here long before the English decided they needed to rewrite the history books and claim great things for themselves. Lots of Spanish and Indian influence in the stuff you'll see there and in other collections, even if it doesn't resemble the stuff with East Coast roots or look "legitimate" to the late-comers who wrote the history books. The tooling is more in line with the Spanish influence than most folks here can recognize.

If you want to build a persona, say the heck with the English and take a look at what the Spanish brought instead. Some really cool stuff going on in New Mexico long before the pilgrims were begging for food from the Indians.

Much better. If I were you, I'd attach a leather thong to the antler tip so it doesn't get lost.

Yes. It looks like a purse from the late 60's. Especially the leather "lacing".
Yeah, I'm probably done putting lipstick on this pig. :v

Bill, it isn't easily seen in the photo, but I drilled a hole through the antler tip, and there is a leather "thread" going through it, holding it to the bag.

If he sends it to me, and I do find a fifty in it, I'll take both you and Horner75 to lunch. :rotf:

I spose im just trying lend a helping hand at repurposing a would be purse? Also.. it's alot easier for some folks to add this and add that to make an already constructed item suite their needs.I am in that for-mentioned catagory, I seem to lack the skill and patience to sew... :(

No matter how much chrome and paint you add, you can't turn a Pinto into a Mercedes...

Even with poor sewing skills, a proper bag can be easily made which does not look like a poorly-disguised 1960s purse.
