An empty .40 cal casing fits a 3/8 dowel to a 'T'. Cut off the base with a Dremel wheel, drill 3/16 hole through primer cavity. Silver solder 8/32 or ground down 10/32 nut inside. Glue to 3/8 hickory dowel with Gorilla glue and you're done.
Thanks for the ideas. I just finished up a bunch of brass thingies made from .40 cal brass and a couple of ramrod tips from .38 cal. brass. I don't need them all now but you never know when you have to build something.

Personally, I find ml accessories made from modern cartridge brass almost sacreligious. Don't like it.
I have made many short starters from antler and use only cut-offs from hickory ramrod. I concave the ends and fire harden them. The one I use has lasted many years. I'm not anti-brass thingys but they really are not necessary.

Just so you folks know, the really short "brass thingy" on a short starter is called a gozinda.

It got this name because it gozinda the barrel when it is used.

On the longer dowel of a short starter or a ramrod it is often called a gozonda because it gozonda dowel. After it is installed it too becomes a gozinda.

Now, you know the rest of the story.

Thanks Zonie. That makes a lotta sense. I'm gonna put that in my book when I write it. :rotf:

A thingamajig is the porcelain cap that goes over the head of the bolt that holds your toilet to the floor.

When made as a seperate tool or incorporated into a short starter, Ned Roberts referred to it as a "ball-set."
