My first muzzle loader is on it's way to me. It was bought as a hunting tool, and now I'm trying to figure out what else I really NEED in order to be properly equipped for a hunt.

Obviously powder, patches, balls, caps...but what else (specific to a percussion muzzle loader) do you carry with you when you hunt? Does anyone use a "speedloader" of any sort?

What I'm trying to do is put together the smallest "kit" I can, so I'm not carrying a bunch of extra stuff around all day. Recommendations on makers/sellers of a small hunting bag would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you hunting large or small game?
Kind of depends on your gun, but if it's a hooked breech with wedges, Traditions or CVA sells a combo wedge puller/nipple wrench that saves one tool.
I tried carrying speed loaders but never needed speed that much. There just is no quick follow up shot in this sport. If you shoot a deer, for instance, you can reload in 15 seconds with a speed loader or 30 with horn, measure and ball block. Either way, the deer is out of sight or down close by.
You'll want a capper, either brass commercial or handmade leather.
Hope this helps; I sent you a PM.

I usually hunt in wilderness areas for several days on end so I always carry cleaning supplies with me. This includes a jag, bore brush, cleaning patches and some pre-oiled patches. I also carry a bullet puller, a patch puller and a nipple pick.

If you're just deer hunting for the day, I'd take a capper, a short starter and a couple of loaded speed-loaders in your pockets. Bring your shooting bag with all the rest of your stuff along but leave it in the truck. You'll probably only need one or 2 shots anyway. The bag in the truck is just in case... YMMV

For my bigger game hunting is use to carry all kinds of "extra" stuff that I always never used...Now I carry a five shot loading block and enought powder in a small horn for those shots... Don't believe I have ever gottin' into more than two into the block...Always start with the gun loaded ahead of time, usually at home or camp the night before..Less to do/think about in the morning...Carry the gun for the most part in a gortex sheath while hunting until the time is right...Provides protection from mositure, brush, and glare...The Best...The Lizard...

trey, before this over....and it'll never end! you will need therapy! you have contacted a addiction that will not stop..ahhhh,you say it jes fer huntin... :rotf: wait a year...can you spell flintlock? good luck! you'll wish ya had started years ago! RC..... oh jes wait......... :winking:

Youre right. It never ends.Your first gun cant slap you for lookin at another one you want.Always got them wanderin eyes.

Kinda takes all the fun out of it doesn't it? :rotf:

Being also new in ML hunting I have found the following scarce equipment:

possible bag, 5 speed loaders with bp charge and .54 miniebullet, caps, nipple needle, knife, small binoculars. For small game bullet board for 5 PRB and BP-flask.

you'll learn as you go along and customize
I carry three speed loaders with measured powder patch and ball in them and a capper but my main hunting place is within a few miles of a hunting camp I drive into so I keep a load of stuff there and go into the woods light. I have very rarely needed any of it 'cept the shot I'm loaded with
Once I shot a doe and had to quickly reload when I saw a buck flush out after I shot into a feild below me and stop! I missed him though {too far}

Patience....and just remember that being out there is the real joy.

Good luck and take some pics!
