For almost 20 years I have been studying longrifles and occasionally come across the term “Roman nose”, usually in reference to some attribute of the buttstock. To this day I cannot say I know exactly what that means. Is it a subjective term whose meaning depends on context, or is it a succinct and quantifiable feature that someone can explain or illustrate?

The Roman Nose stock configuration is a curving top line on the buttstock to give more drop. This is useful for some forms of offhand shooting. If not done well, one will get cheek slapping and shooting off a rest is uncomfortable.

The Roman Nose was typical of several areas especially those made in the Reading area of Berks County by Haga, Bonewitz, Figthorn, Ready and others. This one is attributed to Wolfgang Haga. The top of the butt is curved while the bottom is straight. On Lehigh rifles both the top and the bottom of the Butt would be curved.
