Well yes, I know my Poor Boy flintlock from TVM is 9 months away, but already have the new possibles bag and starting to add to it my flintlock stuff.
My question, how do I know what flints to order? Is there a certain kind for my rifle/lock, a certain style? I just don't know. 45 Cal Right hand Siler Lock if that makes any difference.
I see so many different choices.
As usual, with all the help you folks have given me, I ask for more and HIGHLY appreciate it.

You need to know what size (width) of flint is needed (1/2", 3/4", etc.) for your lock before you purchase. Stay away from the cut flints (very few have anything positive to say about these).

My large siler lock loves the #6 black English flints from Track of the Wolf. If you know how to keep them knapped and sharp, each will last you for many, many shots. :hatsoff:

Go to Track of the Wolf and look up Tom Fuller's English Gun Flints. Very helpful listing of where to match up flints for your lock.

I'd like to pick up a dozen of these for my Lyman Deerstalker. Unfortunately, they're out of stock in my size for now.

I ordered a dozen flints from Stonewall Creek Outfitters (very good reputation). All they had were French flints in the size I needed. Unfortunately, the angle doesn't seem to work well for my Deerstalker as they hit nearly straight on and break. The agate flint and a Traditions English flint don't seem to have the same problem.

You might ask the folks who are making your rifle, seems a good place to start with at first.

Aye, when time gets closer will shoot them a email or call. Just wanted to grab the moose by the horns and get as much info as possible and where better, here with you folks.

Seems the builder would have more of a grasp of the moose than folks here, but when a person spends $1,500 he should trust folks he does not know.

Just as an observation - the people on this website have an estimated collective experience amounting to several hundred years (or more). Don't sell them short...

Never a bad recommendation, I consider it research... you can take it or go on for further research.
Lucky at my age, my mind still stores most, but not all, of the info gathered, although my wife would disagree with that. According to her I can't remember what she told me yesterday.
What I base my question on is that someone here may have purchased the same rifle.
Again all info on any part of shooting a flintlock is well appreciated.

Your Siler lock should be one of the new delux design locks from Jim Chambers. While TVM is probably doing the assembly, including the hardening and tempering, you will be getting a good lock. TVM should add a bullet point to their FAQ sheet to include flint sizes for common locks.

I like the black English flints knapped by Tom Fuller. The Track of the Wolf site lists the Flint-Eng-6 in 3/4" by 7/8" for the newer large Siler locks. Still it won't be out of place for you to ask TVM for a recommendation. If you order flints from ToW, be sure to ask for flints with the flat on top and bottom. Flints with a humped top can be difficult to install in most lock jaws.
