What gives with the weight of some newly aquired lead

FWIW a .490 ball changes about 1 grain for every .001 inch it is bigger or smaller than .490. Yours are dropping about .005 less than .490 so I would expect them to weigh about 172 grains. (OK, I went through the math and it calculates out to 171.6 grains.) It looks like they are right where you would expect for pure lead.
 
You are spot on. :thumbsup: They shoot well (for my needs) and they are easy to melt down. So my plan is Melt, pour, load, shoot, Recover from the target box and Repeat.
