A gun my dad had owned. Any idea the history of this gun? What it is? Looks like the Barrel was possibly sawed off.

Can you make out what is written between the stars on the top flat of the barrel? Perhaps a sprinkling of chalk dust gently wiped off may reveal the writing.

I agree, your rifle has the look of a cut down half stock trade rifle. The builder used a production Golcher lock.
 
Do these look familiar? Almost looks like a 6 or a G for the first marking, then either a & or a U, and then possibly an H?
