What gun is this?

Does anybody know what this gun is? It is a 16 gauge, 49 1/2 inch overall lenght. 34 inch barrel. It is a muzzleloader. Fires well and the lock works great. Pieces are missing, stock and forearm are broke and busted. It had the number 48 stamped in various places. No other markings.Would like to know who made it, how old it is and if it is worth anything.

Looks like an old Wesson muzzleloader.

If you read the thread titled "What is this" ”“ in this same section of the forum, you'll see a long discussion of virtually the identical gun.

Thanks JV. I read the article, but the only thing that throws me is that there is no marks on the barrel like the one in the reading. The only marks is a # 48 on the butt of the gun, and where forearm covers the barrel, and where the breach is. Other than that it looks actually like the other gun. Now i have a ideal that it might be a wesson. But now where do i go to do more research on it? The gun really has some charm to it, even if it is really ugly looking. LOL Thanks for the help.

I agree that what you have is a Wesson rifle. You may be able to google up "Wesson Rifles" and come up with more pictures to compare with. I also believe tat the number 48 is probably an assembly number used to keep parts together during assembly of the rifle. Good luck.

both guns are Tinsleys,, if my example < in the other post> is anywhere close..

The guns in question are not Wessons.. although they are a generic form of Box lock..

But that's only My opinion?? :idunno:

Ethen Allen Muzzle loading shotgun (Allen & Thuber--Allen & Wheelock)made from about 1848 to 1870 24ga.to 12 gauge. Rarely marked with maker's name because they were sold though many different retailers.

I have the same thing, only a SXS. Also un marked.
