...I could buy for an Issaic Haines rifle?

(Best sparking, most reliable, trouble free, etc)

Siler / Jim Chambers none better, My 2 cents

I agree, too.

A Jim Chambers lock, possibly worked over and smoothed by a competent gunsmith with any alterations to work it into an Issac Haines will be a dandy.

I have a Jim Chambers Early Germanic from Tip Curtis that had the lockplate altered & worked over by John Donelson to mimic a Rupp original and it is a beaut.

A siler lock has pretty much been the standard of the industry for about 40 years. There's been a number of people over the years that have been especially good at assemblimg and hardening this lock. Today, I think the Chambers locks are the top of the line. I've used nothing else for 10 years at least. I'd go with the Deluxe Siler as the best choice for the kit. Slight improvement in geometry over the standard siler.

:hmm:
I'm picking up some vibes that the Chambers Deluxe Siler lock just might be the way to go...

Roundball, I take the flint out of one my other name locks when it quits sparking around 30 shots. I put it in my Chambers large Siler and have over 300+ shots of it and still shooting. Yes, I may touch it up about every 75 shots or so. I will not tell you that it throws sparks like a grinding wheel, but it always fires the gun, it is unbelieveable. I just got another gun with the very same lock in it and it is just as good. These 2 locks will put a flint knapper out of buisness.

I have 3 guns with large siler locks, one of them is the large siler deluxe, my next lock will be a large siler deluxe. flinch

If you want the very best, Bob Roller makes an eye popping custom lock that is as slick as snot on a swamp, right out of the box. I don't know what raw castings Roller uses for his Germanic lock, so it may, or may not be appropriate for a Haines rifle.

Stan Hollenbough makes a custom Germanic lock copied from an original Beck rifle that is supposed to be an excellent lock.

The price of the two locks is about 1/3 higher than a Chambers, but there is no finish work to be done. And they both custom make their own springs from spring stock, rather than from castings.

I'll let someone more knowledgeable comment on the appropriateness of the Ditchburn or Roller lock for a Haines.

My second choice would be a Chambers lock.

I began to assemble flintlocks from Siler kits {1978} because of the poor quality Siler flintlocks on the market. There are Silers on the market today that are assembled by various people, some good and some not so good and these flintlocks are offered by muzzleloader supply companies which I don't buy. Since the advent of Siler flintlocks assembled by Jim Chambers, his are the only flintlocks used on my LRs. Why take a chance on the others w/ the exception of a style Chambers doesn't make....Fred

i agree with all those other fellows: large Siler or Deluxe. Jim Chambers really makes a superior product!

just one guy's opinion

IMO, based on George Shumways book RIFLES of COLONIAL AMERICA Vol 1, a Large Siler would be a perfect style for a Lancaster Rifle as was made by I. Haines in the late 1700's.

I agree with the others on the large Siler, but I'll throw in one more from Chambers, his golden age Germanic lock is what I have on my Haines. Very similar to the Siler and very fast. You can buy them from Jim, I also know Stonewall Creek outfitters buys theirs directly from Jim. Jim does recommend a guy to build his lock kits, I can't think of his name right now but I heard Jim say he'll guarantee any lock made by this guy. I want to say his first name is Wayne but I'm just not sure.
