What do you hunting pouch makers suggest for leather straps?

I've made a few pouches from 3 - 4 oz veg tanned, but the straps from the same material seem flimsy, plus they curl up and get hard after dyeing.

Would a heavier weight leather be better ... perhaps 6 - 9 oz, more like a belt?

I've just used the same as the pouch. It should loosen up after use. Depending on the pouch, a fabric strap may be an option.

The heavy leather is great but that leather would be of better use on other items. 10 oz duck canvas(same as period tent material) is a great alternative. It can be dyed or holds beadwork very well. Canvas by nature is stronger and longer lasting as a stap than leather IMO. Just attack some nice leather ends for the buckle(if you use one) Just my two cents in chinese money.

I have taken to ordering sides in both 3~4 oz and 6 oz every time I order, and use the heavier stuff for strapping on the bags that are made with the lighter weight stuff...I will also keep very thin calf hide on hand for binding etc. If you are only making a bag or two, thats probably over kill, but if you make alot of bags its maybe something to consider?
