On my sail/tarp I used hand sewn groummets, and it works, but you have to carry some extra line to set it up.
I have also made ties for a light tarp, and a lean-to that were just some of the cloth folded in on inself so there were no raw edges, and stitched them, I kinka like the ties, they are adaptable, and don't add very much weight (they just wouldn't have worked with the sail...)
I pre-shrink everything, so it dosen't leak too much, but I don't waterproof them, it adds too much weight. The tarp slows down the rain, but dosen't stop all of it... I use a linseed oiled ground cloth to keep everything dry....
