My husband's birthday is coming up and I would like to buy him a flintlock. He is an avid hunters and really enjoys shooting. He does not have a flintlock, but does have muzzle loaders. I really know nothing about what to buy. I do know that I want it to look authentic. I also want to stay under $500 if possible. What would you suggest and where would you suggest to buy it from? We have a Gander Mountain by us, but they only had the Traditions flintlock and it looked cheap to me. Thank you for your help!

Hunters Wife,If I were you I would stay away the Traditions Flintlocks. You are better off to buy something a little better.Only thing I can think of in your price range[$500 don't get much of anything these days]would be a Lyman Great Plains Rifle in Flintlock. These are very good rifles for the money and fairly authentic. The locks sometimes need a little fussing with but plenty of people on here could help your hubby with that. There are 2 Great Plains rifles.1 has a slow twist rifling in the barrel for mostly round ball shooting it is called the Great Plains Rifle. The other 1 has a fast twist rifling in its barrel for shooting slugs-bullets,it is called Great Plains Hunter. The Great Plains Rifle would be more Traditional.Just Google up Great Plains Rifle and there will be tons of info and Prices.Lyman has some lower priced rifles but they are not as authentic as the Great Plains Rifle.Good luck on your search and your hubby has a smart and lovely wife.

The Lyman suggestion is a pretty good one.

Can you shoot some photos of the muzzleloaders he already has, and post them to give us a better idea of what he likes? Flinters were pretty prominent for about a century and in that time lots of styles appeared.

I don't own a flintlock and I'm not sure I would want to start shooting one. I wouldn't mind owning one just to admire it, I think they are a beautiful design.
To Hunters wife, I would ask him in a round about way, if he ever thought about getting into shooting flintlocks. Better to know if he's interested in shooting them before you buy one.

Check out Gunbroker and Gun Auction. Odds are you can find a Thompson Center flinter for less than $500, and probably less than $400. If you're patient, and can spend a little more, you could probably get a slightly used custom gun off those web sites for $700-800, or about the price of a parts set.

Track of the Wolf often has used stuff in that price range too.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I really appreciate it. He has used a friends flintlock the last two deer seasons and they really enjoyed so I am sure he will be excited with his gift. Or at least I hope he is!
