Well, I made a big breakfast as I usually do this morning and I thought to myself, "I need to be saving my bacon grease!" After filtering it through a few coffee filters, I now have a nice jar of grease. What would be some uses? One obvious thing is to season my castiron cookware which I usually do, but I'm just wanting to see if there's any other useful tasks for it. :hatsoff:

Depending on what other meals I have planned I might save some for cooking/frying the next meal.
Otherwise I toss it because it's too salty and much of it has artificial chemicals like smoke flavor.
I have no magical "home use" for bacon grease.
Lard is too cheap and keeps longer.

Well prior to the health police showing up it was used to flavor greens, pea soup, fry eggs, fry fish.
Now a days I use bits of smoked ham or fried out bacon to flavor greens, pea soup, etc. The bacon fat is still unsurpassed for frying eggs or fish. Probably OK now and then.
Some folks claim to can pack raw and cooked meat in lard. Put some in the bottom of a pot, then add meat, then pour the lard all around and over the meat- keeps for maybe a month. I don't know if bacon fat could be used- might have to strain it out pretty good.

It makes good popcorn and french-fries....

Or you could make a grease lamp or candle.....or refine it further and make soap..

or keep it for frying eggs in....

I never, ever, throw out bacon grease (or especially grease that chicken has been fried in) as it makes a GREAT basis for quickly making cream or brown gravy and imparting additional flavor to vegetable dishes.

just my OPINION, satx

Add to Grits for flavoring,,fry eggs in it,base for Gravies,,,, not a frequent meal but once in a while!!!

That's a good one! My German Shepherd absolutely hates taking meds and this might help. I also am all about the flavoring, might give it a shot tonight for dinner.

Speaking of German. A couple restaurants around Stuttgart serve soft pretzels with a bowl of bacon grease with some crumbles left in it instead of bread and butter.

FYI - Fat guidelines are likely to change in the near future (as did the cholesterol recommendations).

As long as you aren't drinking bacon grease every day, I'm fairly certain a little isn't going to hurt.

Interesting... last time I went that way it seemed the fish and chips in England were made with bacon grease it was that delicious!!!! Talk about YUUUMMMM!!!! I had so much I got sick, and it wasn't from all the pub stops!

I put it is a small container and put it in the freezer for future use. Keeps forever or close to it.
