What type of filler do you use?

x4 on the felt wads.

After trying them, I thought that fillers were a pain, and quickly went to the wads.

'Course I just have the one Kennedy flint pistol now (see avatar), so don't need either!

I've used felt wads to good effect, but I get equivalent performance using 2 squares of 2 ply TP with a tiny dab of tallow + beeswax ball lube folded up inside. Accuracy is impressive with 23 gr. 3F Goex.

Try the wads in your flint pistol, many times they will improve groups.

In a rifled barrel with a round ball ???

It's not a pistol slug, so what would engage the rifling ???

A 0.018 patch with a .490 ball works just fine. :)

I'm pretty sure he meant to say, "Try the wads between the powder and the patched ball in your flit pistol...."
:)

Ah ... that makes more sense to me.

Maybe my thoughts were on my smoothbore Chief's gun, where I DO use wads (and a 0.610 ball) with no patch.

I might give wads with a patch a try in my pistol.

Adding a overpowder wad might help improve accuracy but I wouldn't count on it.

I think wads between the powder and patched ball can help if the patch is being burned but if the patch is coming out of the barrel undamaged it's probably not going to gain much.

With heavy rifle powder charges, wads can help a lot but IMO, most pistol loads won't create a problem for patches.

Those light powder loads that are used in pistols are also the reason looser patch/ball combinations still shoot well.
