Coats had pockets, often very large. You often read about food wrapped in a handkerchief and stored in a pocket.

Not-attached pockets are worn by women. :blah:

Down the shirt is another good period practice. :thumbsup:
 
That would depend on which part of the 18th century we're talking about wouldn't it? Just reread the original post and realized he's concerned with the early 19th century anyway. Oops.
 
Ya'll are forgetting the biggest medical necessity of them all...."A Whiskey Flask".... :grin: For snake bites, infections and such. Not to mention how it will take the bite out of the cool damp air.... :wink: As for the hunt, i'am a firm believer in the ole saying, "It's far better to have it and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it"... :thumbsup: So i go loaded for bear regardless..... :2
