Hi guys, I have a Parker Hale 2 band Enfield .58 with 1 in 48 twist. I have been told to only use bullets and not ball. Is this true or not. I am very new to BP shooting, so any help would be appreciated

I have a .58 cal. TC Renegade that is 1 in 48,it will shoot round balls and bullets.Haven't had much luck with minnie's but the TC maxi-balls shoot pretty good.Round balls 70 gr. 3F triple 7,100gr 2F triple 7 with maxi-balls,same POI at 100 yards.

A great gun! Traditional/military load would be a minie ball (called a ball by common usage, actually a hollow base bullet). With a minie, you should be able to hit a paint can on a fencepost at 100yds with every shot. I never tried a patched round ball in mine as I never had a roundball mold in that size. PS - as I recall, the Parker Hales are .577 rather than .58 and I used a sizing swage on my homecast minies. :)

Use Minnie's in a Parker Hale. If it is the English made gun don't know about the new India made guns. I was lead to believe the rifling in the English guns is gain twist and larger bore at the breech. This would make the minnies shoot fine but the patch and ball would have a loose fit in the breech and not take the rifling well. I have not tried PRB in mine and it will shoot minnies very well. The only way is to shoot both and see what your gun likes. I'll guess minnie's.

The rifling in the original P/58 Naval Rifle and the Parker-Hale reproduction is progressive depth and of uniform twist. It is not gain twist.

The progressive depth rifling is deeper at the breech than at the muzzle. The bore size remains unchanged.

Typically the shallow based Minie bullets are regarded as better than their deep based counterpart for the P/58.

Thanks for the correction. That was what I was trying to say. I knew there was some reason the rifling was different in the breach that made shooting PRB in a Parker Hale not be as good as the Minnies it was designed for.
Thanks: Fox

As the depth of the rifling gets shallower towards the muzzle, there could possibly be a tendency for the patched ball to skip the rifling. That being said people have posted here before that they get good results from PRB and the P/H Enfields.

Back to the original question at the start of this thread, if there is a desire to shoot PRB in the Enfield try it and see what the results are. Range will be a limitation with ball.
