What's in Your Possibles Bag ?

Just wondering what all you fine folks carry out into the wild when trekking or hunting. What items do you just have to bring along ?

Hey ChefCJ,

Aside from the powder, patch, ball and shortstarter I carry the following. A spare mainspring, tow, a knapper/screwdriver, a mainspring vise, a small bag of shot and wads, a tow worm, a cleaning jag, a 1.5 0z glass bottle of oil, a 1oz. glass bottle of "moosemilk", a flint wallet with cleaning patches, a spare touch hole pick, a turkey call and a squirrel call. If I am out for an overnighter I cram it full of a lot of other stuff but that is the basics.

sometimes a compass...I live where Daniel Boone got lost for 3 days.

I use two bags. In the shooting bag, everthing for the gun including ladel and mould spare lead,Brown Bess musket balls, two or three of 'em and my .40's good for day's. In my possables bag, stuff for a comfortable camp. Folding candel lantern,skillet,dried peas,corn&rice,a few spices,lard,spare mocc's,cup,flask of rumitize medicine,small new testament,fire kit and a first aid kit.

The contents of my bag are the same as others already posted. One additional item that I carry - this is for a flint lock mind you, an old nasal spray bottle filled with denatured alcohol. When hunting, you get your frizzen and/or rock wet from snow, rain, whatever, you are out of service until it is dry. Denatured alchol dries these surfaces very quickly and will degrease your frizzen should you happen to slop something on there that shouldn't be there.

I hunt in rain and snow and I just use my shirt to dry the frizzen etc. I do use denatured alcohol after cleaning (at home) to remove oils from the frizzen.

I also carry two bags when hunting.

As I do a lot of stalking, I'm trying to keep it light.

In my shooting bag (oil/waxed 7"x8") I have patch cloth strip, Jaw pin/touchhole pick(tied and tucked in), small bottle of orange cleaning fluid, small oil bottle, small driver, small flat pliers(almost PC), flints and ramrod attachments in a wallet, and a jackknife.
I carry six prb's on a ball block around my neck.
Powderhorn tied to bag strap, antler measure and antler tip brush attached.

In a leather belt pouch (oil/waxed 7x10) I keep more modern hunting gear. Two sets of guttin' gloves, some plastic bags, twist ties, head strap flashlight, TP, and 3-4 mesh game bags.

Much more gear and I get tired hiking through the snow and woods.
Also length of rope looped around my waist.

Let me see here...I got an extra pair of underwear, a Baby-Ruth candy-bar, hu...what is this thing? Oh, here's a dollar bill, a stick of jucy fruit, a..ewwww...I think it's alive. ummm...some receipts from Wal-Mart, some little lead ball thingies, some thick cloth with some lines on it, a funny looking knife, a little cast iron spoon with a long handle, and a strange looking tool with the word "Rapine" on it...let me get a lighter so I can see more clearly what this black stuff is in the bottom.... :shocked2:

i don't go trekking, and I haven't gone hunting yet, (and I stress "yet") but I do take my possibles bag to the range so that I get used to all of that good stuff. I carry a leather bag of shot (i made it myself), sometimes a flask of 3f powder (for duplex load), a bag of patches, needlenose pliers (i know that's too modern, but I find it useful at times) a short starter and brass powder measure. In my secondary little pouches in my bag, I keep my pan primer for backup, knapping hammer, ring of tools (pan brush, hex rod with notch for knapping and vent pick) flints, pre-lubed patches, jag, worm, ball puller.

In addition, I carry my 2f powder horn strapped to the right side of my body, and my 4f home-made powder horn strapped to the left side.

Now that I've written it all down, it seems like a lot of stuff!

I carry a tool roll with:
Screwdriver to fit flint jaw and sideplate
Mainspring vise
Spare vent picks
12 cleaning patches
5 spare flints
Cleaning jag
Ted Cash oil bottle
Piece of leather strap (for added grip in pulling a stuck rod or ball)

I carry a tin of Moose Snot, a bottle of moose milk, a tiny (nitro tablets) of 91% alcohol to wipe the frizzen, and a waxed deerskin bag with six feet of pre-lubed cotton ticking.

In the patchbox are a tow worm, ball pulling screw, button jag and a spare flint (wrapped in cotton tick that's pinned by the box spring so they don't rattle or fall out if the box gets accidently opened).

On the horn strap are a powder measure, vent pick (bent to hang beside the measure), and a three-hole ball block.

I also have three spare flint leathers in the ball bag (which holds up to 60 balls, but usually less).

I make the distinction between a "possibles bag" and a "shot bag" (or hunting pouch). A possibles bag is more like the haversack. Things you might possibly need. The shot pouch is things you WILL need to shoot and maintain the gun. Food, spare socks, cookware - not in the shot bag.

My hunting pouch is fairly small, but I can still hold the fixins for 60 rounds when treking or wandering off to shoot. And, the gear to clean the rifle up afterwards.

Guttin' Gloves (GUT' in gluvs)

1) cheap plastic gloves with shoulder length cuffs in an irritatingly unnatural color.

2) surgical type gloves.

3) dishwashing style gloves.

Mine are the former style (#1), 6 for a dollar.

In my bag I carry a strip of pillow ticking, forged screwdriver/hammer, combo pan brush/vent pick, a tin of borebutter, bullet starter, 2 flasks of powder, and my leather toolkit which has a bullet puller, adapters, extra flints and leather. I have a ball bag hanging off my possibles bags and a knife in the carrying strap. Most of the time hunting I would also include a ramrod puller and rubber gloves.
