Although you will find differing opinions, Meerschaum (carved block, not the pressed ones) can be smoked a lot more than briar pipes. Basically you need to let the pipe cool completely; then wipe out the bowl; run a pipe cleaner through the stem; and you're ready to go again. As long as you do that, you can smoke them numerous times a day without damage.
Another really good thing about Meerschaum is that it doesn't ghost like briar pipes will as long as you remember to wipe it out. Also, unlike briar pipes, you do not want a cake to build in Meerschaum.
Clay pipes, which were widely used during the 18th century, also just need to be cooled and the bowl wiped clean. Neat thing about clay pipes is that if they get too much tar build up or they develop a sour or bad taste, you put them in the fire to clean them (don't do that with meerschaum!). You'll find Pipe cleaning fireplace racks were very common along with a fair amount of broken clay pipes. Good news is clay pipes are very inexpensive and if burning the tars out doesn't work for you, buy another one!
