I get mine from salvage yards. For the last 20 years or so I've been using cable sheathing. The las bunch I picked up was 200 lbs @ 22 cents a pound. My favorite is roofing lead. It is the easiest to clean up. Least favorite is old lead sewer pipe. You get plenty but it is nasty to work with.

Lucky me, My son-in-law supervises an army cadet group, they have an indoor rang where they shoot air guns. Twice a year they clean out the pellet traps.............and it's all mine

That´s my lead-source too.
Air gun shooting is very popular over here in germany. Every village usually has a few clubs. Up til now friendly asking was payment enough.
And it´s the perfect soft lead for MLs.

I go to a local scrap yard and buy cable sheathing which they clean and flatten.

Two years ago I purchased 1,000 lbs at .40 cents a lb.

Thanks for posting the question & thanks to all who responded. A trip to two stained glass shops today got me 38 lbs of free lead! :)

If anyone is interesed, Ace Iron and Metal Recycling in Columbus Ohio sells scrap lead for 48 cents/lb. Bought 83 lbs of sewer pipe today for $40. Got all the pipe they had, but there was some bits and pieces still in the big box they use as a bin. The plumbing supply house I went to sells lead ingots at $1.96/lb.

Tire dealer here wants $.50 a lb for old wheelweights. Going to check for better deals.

Make sure they are lead. There is a big push to eliminate lead wheel weights because the contaminate the roadside with they fall off.

Or go to the wreckin yard and get the weights off the older cars.May be cheaper,Maybe not.

lead can be bought on e-bay some times the price is not to high ,it`s a good source if you cant find good soft lead any where else. :winking:

The radiology labs and any rooms where X-Rays are taken have the walls lined with sheet lead. Hospitals are constantly undergoing remodel construction and if you ask the right person, you may get to haul off the debris for free. A friend of mine is the construction supervisor here at our local hospital and has given me 700-800 lbs. of lead over the last several years. It's good soft lead. Only the best for the medical industry, you know.

I went to a recycle yard in Phoenix and picked up 153 lbs at $.75 a lbs. He must have had 5 tons of lead sitting there in sheets, in different designes from walls, and in loose scrap. I think I have enough for now but I know where to go when I'll need more
