OK, New to the muzzleloading era! My question is, were the period tomahawks as well finished as the new made ones that I have seen. Some of the ones that I have seen pictures of on this sight seem too artistic in their creation to ever be used. I love the hours and hours it must of taken to make them but would hate to mark them up by use.

This is likely a matter of the who, where and when native cerimonial hawks would be much different than a white frontiersmans trade hatchet.

when most whitemen used a hatchet or tomahawk in battle it was because it was a useful tool for the moment and they did battle out of neccesity so there was no real magic or power in the ,weapon. When a indian had a weapon and used it it had to have power and spirit and so he made them beautiful and colorful, beaded them, feathered them and made them look like something so his enemy would know who he was ,battle to an indian was glorious and the one chance to prove he was a worthwhile man,and like his weapons he dressed himself for it,he wanted to be seen and remembered so his enemies would fear him if they ever met again
