So will Jute work in my fire kit?

I've got a whole spool of the stuff.

Do I need to do anything to it to make it catch a flame better when I use my char cloth?

Yes, jute will work but you have to unravel rope or twine and separate the individual fibers.....fluff them up into a birds nest..

Jute tends to have real fine fibers and doesn't support a flame for very long, so you have to be quick.

Jute twine is also used for lots of different weaving projects.

Try it as a fire starter and see how you like it.

Done correctly....all you should have to do is let the charcloth build some heat and blow on it a little and it will burst into flames.

Unless your jute has been treated with a fire retardant.

Some of the commercially available jute and hemp products are treated with flame retardants.
These guy's have it right,,
A Flame/Fire Retardant is in all of the stuff available in Hardware stores, Lumber yards, Fleet Supply an such with Sisal and Manilla included.
(It's an OSHA thing, to protect us!)
I tried some of my sisal tent ropes once and it was a no-go.
When I changed out ropes I took the old stuff and hung it along a fence line to get beat up by rain, snow, an sunshine for a year and it now works great.

Yeah, but it's hard to kick that habit, the glue is so tasty. :rotf:

Good news guys, I just tried the jute I bought from Joann's fabric and it works great. I made a small birds nest with it, took my char cloth and flint and got a nice spark burning in the cloth. I put it in my birds nest and blew gently into it. Poof, a nice flame burst forth. This stuff caught fire very fast and burned a nice big fire. A whole spool of the stuff only cost me a few bucks.

I'm as happy as a pig in slop.
