I have decided on a smooth bore flintlock but am finding it hard to find options on where to find one. I really want to stay away from production guns due to the fact that I want a lock and touch hole that is more idiot proof. I know am out TVM but where else could one find one maybe with a little less wait. Thanks.

what style are you looking for? might try north star west. i have an old one, that i have been real happy with.

I have never bought anything from them but The Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium has some in stock. They are listed under "Used Custom Guns". They have some new guns under that listing.

North star west is #1, good kits can be had from track of the wolf and pecotonic. Middlesex village carriers Indian made guns that have been reworked here, they are not the most perfect copies but the owners seem to like them. Every pedi Ive seen or handled was a good gun, not perfect but priced right. Ive heard good and bad about sitting fox.Again they aint North star west, but for every caddy theres is a chevy.

Another vote for North Star West. They have several different styles for whatever period you are interested in. There are nice little touches like the "London" stamp on the barrel.
I have their Old English trade gun in 20 gauge and their Officer's Fusil in 16 Gauge. If I could only have one, it would be the fusil. The straighter stock just works better for me. One thing though, if you get the fusil you will have to get a Tanner mold for .648 or hope you can snare an old Ideal/Lyman mold on Ebay

Tip Curtis may have something in the shop waiting for you. He sells a lot of gun for the money.

Clay Smith and Mike Brooks both make very good guns, reasonable too, especially for their trade guns.

I'll second Mike Brooks and Clay Smith, but I suspect there wait list is longer than TVM.

Build one. There are many kits out there that can produce a good gun with the investment of about 60-80 hrs. Most can be put together easily with just a few tools.

Sir,
By stating that you want to stay away from production guns....I gather that you want to invest your money into not only a reliable functioning gun but also one that is historically correct. If an English Carolina trade gun is something that you might consider here are a few names for you.
Micheal Seidelman, Jack Brooks, Mike Brooks. Yes these are expensive builders and the wait may be longer but....you will be very happy with the finished result. You are paying not only for quality gun parts but the experience of the builder with attention to fine details such as....correct barrel length(46" rather than the standard 42")a proper profile barrel, ect.
Many will argue other wise but if I spend close to $2,000.00 for a gun, I want it to be extremely close to an original gun .....good luck in your search.

Absolutely beyond a doubt. I have a Clay Smith rifle and a Mike Brooks trade gun and love them, and were well worth the wait but the original poster asked about one with a shorter waiting time than TVM.

I know

I've made & sold many smoothbored guns and if you would have caught me at the SEPR a couple weeks ago I would have sold you my Mike Brooks Carolina gun. That was before I shot it. Now it has a higher position in my shooting rack. Get one of his Type "G" guns no matter how long the wait if you are a shooter. It's worth the money and the wait, IMHO.

Clay Smith has a few listed on his site that are available right now, can't get much less waiting time than that!
