Walmart or Joann's fabrics. It's about 5 or 6 bucks for a yard. Bring a set of digital calipers and you can measure the thickness of the different types.

One of these fabric cutters here is handy for cutting them into strips. Just lay it out on a board or hard surface.

I wish, Justin. I went to JoAnn's the other day and as usual, I had to check on the supplies in the utility cloth section. Mattress ticking and pillow ticking was $14.99 and my favorite, #40 Cotton Drill was $9.99 a yard. The utility fabrics were 25% off so I couldn't use my 50% discount for regular priced goods. These were all imported from India and 100% cotton.

Wow. It's been a while since I bought any and I guess it was more than I remembered, but I'm sure it's gone up some recently like most other things. That's a bummer because I'm due for some.

Best answer! Spot on!
I learned something last night as I was heading to Walmart anyway and wanted to check the price. I asked for a yard of blue and white ticking and the total was about $6. It measures 36"x45". So I Googled what a "yard" of fabric measures at. It's of course 36" long but the width can vary quite a bit, they come in several widths. But regardless of the width, a 36" length of fabric is called a yard. That may be why I quoted it as around $6 for a yard and @Grenadier1758 paid more per yard. The width of his fabric from Joann's was probably longer. That or it's just cheaper at Walmart, not sure.

@Justin.44, the fabric at Walmart is less expensive. I didn't check the width of the fabric, which is normally 45". I do prefer the tightness of the weave from JoAnn's fabrics to the cloth from Walmart. The ticking from JoAnn's often is thicker than the ticking at Walmart. Material from both suppliers do work fine as patch material. Besides, with the 50% coupon at JoAnn's, the ticking is $7.50 per yard and the drill cloth is $5.00 per yard.

Just a quick question, what is "drill cloth"?

It's a light canvas or so I think. I get it at Joanns. The material I get measures .018". If you find some that works well be sure to write down the product number so you can get the same thing next time. I just wish I could remember to do it.

Drill, sometimes called pocket drill, is a heavy weight cloth used to make the pocket in men's pants. It gets its strength and tight weave from being woven with three threads, the drill from the German drei (three).

To get the thicker cloth, go to the canvas aisle at JoAnn's. The canvas runs from 0.020 to 0.024. You still need to be sure that it's 100% cotton.

^^ what Grenadier said
Duck is also in the canvas section.
My Jo-Ann’s has a denim section too, where I find nice tight weave .020” and .022”
The ticking is usually .015” to .018”
Drill and duck run from about that to too thick.
Denim runs from too thin to too thick, bring “very-near” calipers.
Fabric stores are very strange and disorienting places… only thing I recognized in the tool section was scissors… and man they can get spendy!! But that shiny chrome said I had to buy them!
