I'm going to presume that you are talking about a percussion rifle??

If you are talking flintlock, don't waste your time with anything but real black powder. All of the substitutes require a much higher flash temperature than black powder and don't work for crap in flintlocks because they are so hard to ignite. All you will get is frustrated.

They work fine with percussion caps though. My experience was with real BP, Pyrodex P and 777. The 777 cleaned up more easily than anything else by far and away. I gave away my substitutes about 12 years ago because I only use flintlocks now.
